INTRODUCTION

Last Fall, The Fort Lauderdale Forum held two panel discussions, one with five former City officials and one with six community leaders on the subject of "Ft. Lauderdale, A New Direction?: What's Good, What's Bad, and What Should the New Mayor and Commissioners do?"

Virtually all of the panelists named lack of leadership, vision and achievable goals as a major problem of Fort Lauderdale. While the newly-elected Mayor and Commission can provide theleadership, the community can help develop consensus, vision and goals.

As a result, the Moderator of the Forum began contacting people of various backgrounds, involvements and interests to worktogether on a proposal for a "visioning process" for Fort Lauderdale, to provide to the Mayor and Commission for their consideration.

Over three months, the Group expanded to around two dozen citizens, working as an "Ad Hoc Visioning Planning Group". The results of the visioning planning process are the "Concept Plan for a Community-Oriented Visioning Process" and the "Outline of a Possible Strategic Planning Process for the City of Fort Lauderdale".

These proposals, along with others, were discussed at the March meeting of the Forum.

The Letter to the Mayor and Commission of Fort Lauderdale reflects the submission of the Group's work to the Mayor and Commission.
