MARIJUANA:  SHOULD IT BE LEGALIZED
FOR MEDICAL USE

American public opinion and laws about marijuana use have been changing rapidly.  Twenty states have already legalized marijuana for medical use and some, such as Colorado and Washington, have fully legalized it.  The Justice Department recently announced that it will not enforce the federal laws those states if they meet certain criteria.

In CNN's recent documentary "Weed", well-known Dr. Sanjay Gupta "apologized" for previously speaking against marijuana, saying that "we have been terribly and  systematically mislead for nearly 70 years" about the benefits and dangers of marijuana use. A recent Florida PoltiFact review found  the statement "marijuana is less harmful than alcohol" to be "mostly true".

In Florida, a bill to allow medical use of marijuana was introduced in the legislature last year and supported  by many state-wide editorials but got nowhere.  However, a petition drive organized by "United for Care", which would decriminalize marijuana for medical use, obtained over 100,000 signatures in the first month, passing the legal threshold to obtain Supreme Court review of the language of the amendment,  A recent poll indicated that 70% of Floridians support legalizing medical marijuana.

Most local law enforcement agencies do not have a position on this issue, and a speaker from the DEA was unable to attend. However, other than Rep. Katie Edwards, apparently none of the members of our legislative delegation have taken a position on the issue.
