State of the City

Speakers: Lee Feldman, City of Fort Lauderdale Manager &
Jack  Seiler, City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor
Focus: An assessment of the 2014 day-to-day operations related to running the city government and a  preview of  the mayor's legislative proposals and policy directions for the upcoming year.

Mayor John P. "Jack" Seiler and City Manager Lee Feldman don't use speechwriters for their annual Forum State of the City address. Typically these two leaders speak off the cuff and often the Fort Lauderdale Forum audience is the first to hear their views on the usual subjects related to jobs, economic development, fiscal viability, city roads and waterways, the wave, passenger rail options, pedestrian greenways, bike programs, and the city commitment to protecting, preserving, and enhancing our green space.

Both will touch on the delivery of services ranging from emergency 911 to garbage pick up to clean water. Those remain the meat and potatoes of our city concerns. City pension reforms and taxes are always favorite topics including the bed-taxes tourism generates, and who is the beneficiary of those taxes.

We may hear about Riverwalk lighting and beach renourishment, and the difficult decisions to keep costs down while maintaining the proper safety measures expected in the police and fire departments.

We might discuss last call times at beach bars, family and individual homelessness issues, media distortions which have hurt our image, tourist attractions, our world-class Marine industry, noise problems at Executive Airport and very loud train horns near residential complexes. Count on someone to ask about community redevelopment agencies, smoke-free zones on Fort Lauderdale beaches, the need for speed limits and use of stop signs for traffic calming and tidal control valves.
So while the exact content of our May program is fluid, we can all count on the discourse to be candid and enlightening.

John P. "Jack" Seiler was sworn in as Mayor of the City of Fort Lauderdale on March 17, 2009. Prior to being elected Mayor, Seiler served eight years in the Florida House of Representatives. During his tenure as a State Representative, he chaired the Broward Legislative Delegation in 2007-2008 and was Vice Chair of the Delegation in 2006-2007.

Lee R. Feldman, was appointed City Manager for the City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in June 2011. Prior to this appointment Mr. Feldman was City Manager from 2002 through 2011 in the City of Palm Bay, Florida. He previously served as the City Manager of North Miami, Florida, and as the Deputy City Manager.
